Think Green

The proven technology of a reed switch delivers a sensing solution that is highly reliable, environmentally advantageous, versatile and cost effective.  Some of the unique characteristics of a reed switch include high speed switching capabilities, no mechanical wear, compact size, adaptability to a wide range of power requirements, easy installation, long life and requires no supply voltage for operation.  Reed Switches are used in a wide variety of applications in a multitude of industries requiring open and closed circuits to control safety interlocks, counting devices, limit controls and to monitor the position or speed of an object.

The operation of a reed switch consist of two low reluctance flexible contacts, referred to as "reeds" positioned so that the ends align and overlap, but do not touch.  The reeds are then hermetically sealed in an inert gas atmosphere within a glass tube.   While the reed switch is exposed to an external magnetic field, poles of opposite polarity are created and the contacts close when the magnetic force exceeds the spring rate of the reeds.  As the magnetic field is reduced to a point when the force between the reeds is less than the spring rate, they open. When the magnetic field causes the contacts to open or close, the electrical circuit will be broken or completed.

  1. High Reliability is attributed to the hermetically sealed contacts that provide, consistent trouble-free operation that are not affected by temperature change, moisture, chemicals, dust, abrasive fluids, or harsh environments.   The switch is intrinsically safe in combustible environments.  The permanent magnetic force is not affected by power systems failures since no power is needed to activate a reed switch.  Additionally, there are no mechanical parts such as cams, plungers, slides, levers or rollers to corrode, wear or fail.  No maintenance required!

  2. Versatility is demonstrated by the ability of a reed switch to control a wide range of supplied voltages.  Also, the small unique housings a reed switch can be encapsulated into provide rapid installation with a variety of mounting methods.  The switches are resistant to shock, moisture and vibration.

  3. Cost Effectiveness is highlighted by the low cost per unit and ease of Installation.  The long operating life allows the exact same cycle to be accurately repeated for millions of operations with no aging effects.  No elaborate control systems are required to operate a reed switch.
